New Peerage – Order of the Mark
A new Peerage Order is being created in the SCA in ASLX (2025) with Kingdoms naming their first three Principals to the Order from 1 May ASLX and the elevations to occur from 7 June ASLX. For more information, see the official announcement: New Peerage Order Named.
The Peerage is called the Order of the Mark (OotM) and will be bestowed for those who have achieved a standard of excellence in prowess for ranged martial pursuits.
Lochac’s Principals were sent to vigil by the Their Majesties Kitan & Alesia and Their Highnesses Ariston & Jochen, being Angele Marie de Savigny, Ulric of Ambledune, and Ranif Pallesser. They will be elevated at Great Northern War in the Northern Reaches (Brisbane region, Queensland, Australia) on 7 June ASLX.

The three Principles of the Order in Lochac have requested for Lochac’s Worshipful Company of Broderers to produce a cloak for the new order, akin to the Laurel, Pelican, and Royal cloaks that the Company has previously produced.
Embroidered cloaks are large scale projects and it will not be possible to research, design, and create a cloak in time for the establishment of the Order on 7 June ASLX.
The Company is keen to support the creation of this new Order. My intention as Guildmaster is to project manage the creation of this new peerage cloak:
- Running a competition for designing the new cloak (thank you to Mistress Rowan Perigrynne for the idea!).
- Consulting the three Principles of the Order on the competition entries received to select a winning design, and announce the winner.
- Costing and seeking funding for creation of the new cloak (e.g. through Rowany Fighter Auction Tournament funds or other viable avenues).
- Once funding has been secured, creating the instructions and kits for distributing for embroidery around the Company, and keeping track of progress.
- Presenting the completed cloak to Their Majesties and the Order of the Mark for use in peerage ceremonies.
Regalia Design Competition Details
The competition for designing the Order of the Mark cloak will open on 5 May 2025 and close on 31 August 2025. This will give entrants 4 months to undertake research, draw designs, and provide their entry via email as a Word Document or Adobe PDF file to Guildmaster Ceara Shionnach.
The entry should include:
- clear references and images of period sources, including information on the period materials used in the design inspirations.
- Any sketches or digital mock-ups of the Lochac-specific design.
- Adherence as much as possible to the Regalia Design Principles (below).
Examples of the level of information requested can be read on the Laurel, Pelican, and Royal cloaks webpages.
Regalia Design Principles
- Similar size to Lochac’s Laurel and Pelican cloaks.
- Must feature the badge of the Order in some way (either tinctured or tinctureless, which means depicting the badge with or without a background).
- Could feature the specific styles of combat undertaken by the members (might increase over time), such as target archery, combat archery, siege weaponry, and thrown weapons.
- Ideally, based on period sources (i.e. extant museum pieces and/or pre-17th century images or descriptions).
- No colours have been specified with the official badge order or for the creation of the cloak. As such, drawing inspiration in any combination of Lochac colours of argent (white), gules (red), and azure (blue) would be the default concept. Other colour options may be considered.
